Applications

The Principal is the only person authorised to register their school for participation in the STEP program. A school must be registered for STEP before students can register their interest in the program. As part of the schools registration, the Principal must nominate a STEP Coordinator for their school. Southbank Institute has developed strong relationships with private and public schools across South East Queensland, and over 160 schools are already registered for the program.

Each school's STEP Coordinator is the liaison between the school, parents and Southbank Institute of Technology. The STEP Coordinator assists students wishing to apply for STEP, provides recommendations to the Principal regarding students wishing to take part in STEP diplomas, and coordinates their school's STEP students.

Southbank Institute promotes the STEP program through its network of STEP Coordinators, and seeks the assistance of each school in managing the dates and processes of STEP. Please contact your school for further information regarding their registration for STEP and support for STEP applications.

Southbank Institute encourages students and parents to identify additional learning or physical support that may be required within their application. This allows contact with Accessibility Services and planned delivery with teaching staff prior to start of study.

To ensure an equitable application process, Southbank Institute undertakes Vocational Indicator testing through the Australian Centre for Educational Research (ACER).

The Vocational Indicator is an online assessment for identifying a student's level of capability in:

The testing is not IQ based, but a broader assessment of a student's readiness for vocational study and training.

Admissions to the STEP program

Stage 1: Applications through STEP HUB

STEPHUB is used to manage all applicants and enrolments in STEP. Applications will open Monday 1 August 2011. All students need to make their application with the support of their school STEP Coordinator. Students will be required to complete an online personal details form and select a first and second preference for the program they would like to study. Southbank Institute will not progress a student's application until the parental consent form is returned via the school.

Stage 2: Vocational Indicator Testing at Southbank campus

Once applications are closed and the STEP team is satisfied that all pre-conditions have been met, a booking for testing will be confirmed and communicated with each student and school. These sessions will be conducted early-mid September, and require attendance on-site for 1.5 hours. A sample test is available via registration at the ACER website.

Stage 3: Successful students notified and enrolled

All applicants will be advised of the outcome to their application in late September, via an email to their school and nominated email address. Successful applicants will subsequently receive enrolment packs with a designated enrolment deadline date. Southbank Institute will not confirm a position for each student until they are enrolled and paid. Unconfirmed positions will be re-allocated following this date.
