Science Industry Preparation
Introducing the award winning Science Industry Preparation (SIP) program
Southbank Institute is currently seeking expressions of interest from students interested in studying the award winning Science Industry Preparation program. The 2010 SIP pilot program for year 10 and 11 school students won the QASMT (Queensland Academy of Science, Mathematics and Technology), Queensland Academics 2010 Award for ‘Outstanding Contribution to the Academy’ in the tertiary sector and achieved a 100% success rate with all 107 enrolled students successfully graduating from the program.
What is SIP
Science Industry Preparation Course is delivered via the nationally accredited MSL09 Laboratory Operations training package and is run alongside the science extension curricula for years 10 and 11 - in conjunction with students’ school work. This course allows students to study for the Certificate III in Laboratory Skills and Certificate IV Laboratory Techniques.
Benefits to students
- Value-adds to students’ science extension program providing hands-on laboratory training in a wide variety of science specialisations (pathology, forensics, biotechnology, environmental sustainability).
- Provides a nationally recognised qualification enabling students to gain employment in the field of science while they continue their tertiary studies.
- Students gain valuable industry skills.
2011 course dates
- Certificate III Laboratory Skills - 3 October to 25 November 2011
- Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques will be offered in 2012 for students successfully completing the Certificate III
