New Orientation 2005

To mark the celebration of Chinese New Year and the arrival of our new International students, Southbank Institute delighted its clients with a traditional Lion Dance by the Khuan Yee Dragon and Lion Dance Association. Students and staff alike were enthralled by the sensational performance, which commenced in the E-Block courtyard. The Lions wound their way through the crowd, eventually making their way to the Auditorium where the International Orientation commenced.

Attendance at Orientations are compulsory under the Education Services for Overseas Students Act. This year the 11th February Orientation was a great success with attendance to room capacity. The Orientation began at 1pm, hosted by Suzan Gredig who has replaced Vicki Wang as the International Student Support Officer. Students were then officially welcomed to the orientation by the Director of Studies, Sally Lamoin and International Manager, Melissa McArdle. Suzan then shared her experiences as an International Student, before discussing aspects of emotional and physical welfare, accommodation, banking, Immigration issues, and work permits. Other guest speakers on the day included Vicki Wang who is now the AusAid Liaison Manager, and OSHC Worldcare Manger - Anthony Fleming.

Next semester there are plans for an even more informative and exciting orientation, including the opportunity to choose from various international orientation dates, issuing OSHC and ID cards on the day, a variety of guest speakers, and a prize drawer for a trip.

Southbank Institute takes great pride in its level of support for International students. The International Team hopes to improve the support services available, as well as assist students with settling into Australian life, and provide a number of interest activities throughout their stay. Students and Agents are encouraged to provide feedback on International Support, and make suggestions for new activities and improved processes.
