Diploma of Fitness

This program is the highest-level qualification in the fitness industry and leads to the vocational outcome of Fitness Specialist. It provides the student with the in depth knowledge and skills to plan, deliver and monitor the progress of exercise programs for both low risk and moderate risk clients, in conjunction with suitably qualified allied health and/or medical professionals. It may also be used as a career pathway qualification leading onto tertiary studies in the area of human movement studies or exercise science.

The program includes a broad range of advanced technical skills, management and leadership skills incorporating areas of study such as anatomy and physiology; postural appraisal and corrective exercise; the prevention and management of exercise related injuries; body composition management; exercise strategies for individuals with disability, musculo-skeletal conditions, cardio-respiratory needs, metabolic disorders, or neurological impairments and nutrition for clients with specific requirements.



Entry Requirements

English Proficiency: IELTS 5.5 (with no individual band less than 5.0) or TOEFL 530 or ISLPR 2+
And
Completed Year 12 or equivalent or currently employed in the industry; personal participation in fitness activities is also recommended

For entry into just the Diploma of Fitness component successful completion of the Certificate IV in Fitness is required.

Career Opportunities

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be eligible to obtain registration as a Fitness Specialist under the Fitness Australia National Fitness Registration Scheme providing both national and international recognition. Those completing the two-year program are also eligible to register as a Fitness Instructor and a Fitness Trainer.

Career opportunities include: Fitness Instructor; working independently as a Personal Trainer; Older Adult Instructor; working as a Fitness Specialist in conjunction with allied health professionals to provide exercise programs related to exercise rehabilitation, nutrition and weight management; Sports Conditioning Coach; or personal health management provider.

This cost comprises $8000 for Certificate IV in Fitness and $7000 for Diploma of Fitness.

Outline

Upon successful completion of Semester One and Two students will be eligible to apply for a Certificate IV in Fitness;
Upon successful completion of Semester One, Two, Three and Four students will be eligible to apply for a Diploma of Fitness.

Electives are yet to be advised and will depend on students interest areas. Four electives need to be completed.

International Student Information

Southbank Institute of Technology is situated in the city of Brisbane and is Queensland’s largest Government Vocational Education provider, with over 30,000 student enrolments per year. Southbank Institute of Technology is an ideal place to study. The Institute’s three campuses are located at Southbank, Kangaroo Point and Morningside, close to Brisbane’s Central Business District (CBD) and vibrant inner city areas.
Students at Southbank Institute of Technology have access to the Institute’s wide range of facilities and services. These include the Auditorium, Beauty and Natural Therapies Clinic, Bookshop, Cafe, Child-Care Centre, Computer Laboratories, Conference and Function Facilities, Gymnasium, Intercampus Bus and a Restaurant staffed by students from the Institute.

Teaching methods combine face-to-face delivery, self-study and project work. Students may be required to complete work experience and/or field trips to be eligible for the program award. Southbank Institute of Technology assists students in finding appropriate organisations in which to complete this component. The majority of classes are conducted in modern, air conditioned venues. Students have access to computers in our extensive library and e-Learn centres located on each campus.

Students will be required to sit for both open and closed book examinations and in some cases may be required to perform skills tests and/or oral presentations. Individual or group project work may also be used to determine competency.

The International Business Team consists of administrative and support staff, dedicated to assisting students throughout the various stages of study. This assistance ranges from Program Information to Admission Procedures, Entry Requirements, Visa Regulations and requirements for extending studies to Diploma or Degree level. The International Student Support Officer provides assistance with accommodation, Overseas Student Health Cover, public transport information and can refer students to other support services within and outside the Institute.
