Diploma of Anaesthetic Technology

This program is designed to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to assist the Anaesthetist in all procedures of general or local anaesthetics and recovery. The Anaesthetic Technician is required to communicate with other medical personnel, technical and maintenance personnel, patients and persons accompanying patients and is responsible for the preparation prior to anaesthetic procedures, assistance to Anaesthetist during procedures and immediate post-operative recovery. They must be competent in aseptic techniques, control of microbial growth and sterilisation and decontamination procedures.
Entry Requirements
English Proficiency: IELTS 5.5 (with no individual band less than 5.0) or TOEFL 530 or ISLPR 2+
and
Successful completion of Year 12 or equivalent with a Sound Achievement in English and Mathematics and a Sound Achievement in Year 10 Science
or
Non school-leavers are selected according to eligibility and merit, vocational experience, previous study and personal competencies
and
Possession of a current Senior First Aid Certificate
and
Hepatitis B immunisations are mandatory so students must be able to provide records to substantiate this or blood test results to show immunity
and
Successful completion of Year 12 or equivalent with a Sound Achievement in English and Mathematics and a Sound Achievement in Year 10 Science
or

Generally full time classes are timetabled between the hours of 8:00am and 8:00pm, weekdays. Nominal program hours: 1296 hours with 400 hours industry placement over the 2 year period.

Southbank Institute of Technology is situated in the city of Brisbane and is Queensland’s largest Government Vocational Education provider, with over 30,000 student enrolments per year. Southbank Institute of Technology is an ideal place to study. The Institute’s three campuses are located at Southbank, Kangaroo Point and Morningside, close to Brisbane’s Central Business District (CBD) and vibrant inner city areas.

Teaching methods combine face-to-face delivery, self-study and project work. Students may be required to complete work experience and/or field trips to be eligible for the program award. Southbank Institute of Technology assists students in finding appropriate organisations in which to complete this component. The majority of classes are conducted in modern, air conditioned venues. Students have access to computers in our extensive library and e-Learn centres located on each campus.
Students will be required to sit for both open and closed book examinations and in some cases may be required to perform skills tests and/or oral presentations. Individual or group project work may also be used to determine competency.
The International Business Team consists of administrative and support staff, dedicated to assisting students throughout the various stages of study. This assistance ranges from Program Information to Admission Procedures, Entry Requirements, Visa Regulations and requirements for extending studies to Diploma or Degree level. The International Student Support Officer provides assistance with accommodation, Overseas Student Health Cover, public transport information and can refer students to other support services within and outside the Institute.
